Every issue we experience today is an echo of problems humanity has dealt with for decades, if not centuries. “Imperialism” wasn’t a word anyone had invented when the Romans conquered Europe, North Africa, and parts of the Middle East, “racism” wasn’t a word yet when the English conquered Ireland, and “environmentalism” wasn’t a concept Theodore Roosevelt had ever heard when he established the National Park Service in the United States. However, taking the resources belonging to others to increase one’s wealth, the fundamental belief that “us” is better than “them,” and the need to protect nature against the avarice of those who value profit above all are recurring themes in history. The films in this collection drive home the point that the names may change, but the story remains the same until we work to change it.
